Carbs Galore

A low-carbohydrate diet is better for losing weight and may also be better for lowering the risk of heart disease than a low-fat diet, according to a new study.  While low-carb diets have outperformed other diets when it comes to weight loss, some researchers feared they might be worse for heart health because they tend to be high in fat.

While low-carb diets are trending, don’t forget that carbohydrates are the most ready source of glucose for the body. Glucose is a primary source of energy for the brain, so its availability influences psychological processes. When glucose is low, psychological processes requiring mental effort (e.g., self-control, effortful decision-making) are impaired.

Whatever your diet-plan, make sure there are enough carbohydrates to provide a quick dose of glucose for brain activity so that you don’t have to compromise your performance during the day.

Perez Virtue

A quick glance at social media suggests that more than a couple of you are searching for those naked celebrity images that have been leaked online.  You don’t need to look any further than Perez Hilton's gossip site after he published a handful of them.

We have a culprit here? Let’s make an example out of him so that nobody would ever dare to publish someone's private photos ever again.
Or
Remorsefulness shown by Mr. Hilton is commendable. The affected celebs should forgive him honorably to appeal his virtue and to trust him to do the right thing in the future.

These are the two courses of actions that can be suggested to avoid this situation in the future. First course of action is representative of morality and is a typical mode of behavior with the help of incentives and punishments.

Second course of action, of appealing his virtue and believing him to do the right thing, may seem a little out of place in today’s cutting edge environment. But this I believe is the right way to go in the modern, affluent, knowledge-based and globalized world. If the long term conflict-avoidance is the goal, then modern rational societies can do with a little belief in human virtue.

Should I stay or should I go.......

Embattled Prime Minister today said he will neither resign nor go on leave, even as anti-government protesters led by Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri continue to mount pressure on him to step down.

Over the past 18 days, the government seems to have failed in reciprocating wisely to protests as Prime Minister gave a disputed statement targeting the army.  On August 30, protestors in Islamabad were charged-over with tear-gas and rubber bullets, consequently killing 3 citizens and injuring over 400. This indicated that the government tenaciously played with innocent lives to protect itself. With this apparent failure of his governance, it has now become a moral obligation for Prime Minister and his cabinet to give their offices up.

Red handed in New York

Early Thursday morning at 3:20, officers from the New York Police Department arrested 17-year-old Mike Kushnir and an unnamed 15-year-old female friend after they received a 911 call. The two teenagers have been accused of vandalizing the 114-year-old Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Monument on Riverside Drive and West 89th Street on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The state landmark has been in existence since Memorial Day 1902. Kushnir and his friend allegedly defaced it with obscene language and lewd drawings, using red paint.

Putting them in jail may not help them understand the gravity of their crime. Make them clean whatever mess they have produced and let them stand by the monument, telling the visitors about their crime and apologizing for what they have done. Making them bring-in other such so-called Graffiti artists and involving them in community service might also make them realize the seriousness of this issue. Youngsters are not concerned about the society anymore; all they care about is technology in their hands and money in their pockets. We have to teach them how to live in a civilized society.

Heart Disease

Heart disease is the number one cause of death for both men and women in the United States, claiming approximately 1 million lives annually. It is expected that by 2020 heart disease will be the leading cause of death throughout the world.

With such a dismal scenario, the discovery of this new wonder drug, Alirocumab, is invigorating news for high cholesterol patients around the world. Commenting on the findings Dr. Jennifer Robinson, who led the study, said "This is an agent that is doing what we want it to do, it’s very encouraging."  The drug is expected to be in the market in the coming year.

Israeli Terrorist

Israel expropriates Palestinian land and then cries ‘terrorism’ when Hamas retorts in reaction. How else should they (Hamas) respond? International powers back Israel in every right and wrong. They are not entitled to self-government. Neither are they given the status of equal citizenship in the state of Israel. Isn’t terrorism the only option left to them? Sartre once pointed out that 'terrorism is a terrible weapon but the oppressed poor have none other.'

A lasting peace and a long-term solution won’t be reached until a just settlement is afforded to Palestinians; either it be a two-state solution or a single-state solution. Leave behind even a hint of injustice, you give militants an excuse for violence. This latest expansionist episode by Israel is a big blow to the ideal of a peaceful world.
