A
low-carbohydrate diet is better for losing weight and may also be better for
lowering the risk of heart disease than a low-fat diet, according to a new
study. While low-carb diets have
outperformed other diets when it comes to weight loss, some researchers feared
they might be worse for heart health because they tend to be high in fat.
While
low-carb diets are trending, don’t forget that carbohydrates are the most ready
source of glucose for the body. Glucose is a primary source of energy for the
brain, so its availability influences psychological processes. When glucose is
low, psychological processes requiring mental effort (e.g., self-control,
effortful decision-making) are impaired.
Whatever your diet-plan, make sure there are enough carbohydrates to provide a quick dose of glucose for brain activity so that you don’t have to compromise your performance during the day.
